Sports in Lubbock Texas

Even though the city of Lubbock is not able to claim a professional sports team as home, there are still a number of teams that provide you with the opportunity to enjoy an exciting game.

Texas Tech University and Lubbock Christian University, both offer many of opportunities with their teams that frequently rank in the top 25 in their respective sports.

For instance, the TTU football team has been ranked as high as number 2 in the country (even though they have never won a national championship), and are frequently in the hunt for a Big 12 Championship.  Though the team has struggled in the last few years, many Lubbockites are hopeful for a return to the high performance achieved in the 2008 season where they headed into a game with the Oklahoma Sooners ranked number 2 in the nation.  The game didn’t go well for Tech but it was still the best regular season finish in Red Raiders history.

The men’s basketball team has competed in several tournaments in the round of sweet 16, and the women’s basketball team won a national title by beating Ohio State in the championship game in 1993, finishing that season with an impressive record of 31-3.

Both the LCU Chaparrals and Red Raider baseball teams have had impressive performances, including several national title opportunities.

Texas Tech has had two appearances in the College Baseball World Series in recent years and the Chaparrals have won two NAIA national title World Series.  They finished number one in 1983 and 2009 and were NAIA national title runners-up in 2011.

The Lady Chaparrals finished the 2016 season as the national champions after defeating the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.

So regardless of the sport you find most enjoyable, there is an opportunity to see a great game (and possibly see a team on it’s way to a national championship!)
